Frederick Gorbet, C.M., Ph.D.
Mr. Gorbet is a Principal in Strategy Solutions, a public policy consulting company he founded in January 1997, after almost 30 years of service in the public and private sectors. In addition to working with clients in the private and public sectors, he is currently
- CIT Chair in Financial Services and Co-Director of the Financial Services Program at the Schulich School of Business, York University; and
- Chair of the Market Surveillance Panel for the Ontario Energy Board;
Mr. Gorbet also served as Executive Director to the MacKay Task Force on the Future of the Canadian Financial Services Sector (1997-98) and the Saucier Committee on Corporate Governance (2000-01). During 1999 and 2000 he served as Senior Policy Advisor to Credit Union Central of Canada for the National Initiative of the credit union movement in Canada.
Mr. Gorbet served in the Public Service of Canada from 1968-1992 in a number of positions including Associate Secretary to the Cabinet (Strategic Policy) in 1987 and Deputy Minister of Finance from 1988-1992. Other positions included Assistant Chief of the Research Department in the Bank of Canada, Senior Policy Adviser to the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Director of Policy for the International Energy Agency (Paris, France), and Secretary to the Cabinet for Economic Policy.
From 1993-1996, he held senior executive positions in the life insurance industry with North American Life Assurance Company and with Manulife Financial.
Mr. Gorbet has a BA from York University and a PhD in Economics from Duke University. He is a member of the Advisory Council to the Dean of the Schulich School of Business and an Honorary Governor of York University. Other directorships include CompCorp, Alterna Savings, Alterna Bank, LawPRO, the Credit Union Central of Ontario, the Institute for Research in Public Policy, the Empire Club of Canada, Covenant House, and the North York Harvest Food Bank.
Mr. Gorbet is a senior fellow of the C.D. Howe Institute, a member of both the Panel of Senior Advisors and the Industry Advisory Committee to the Auditor-General of Canada, and the Canadian co-chair of the Advisory Board of the Consortium for Economic Policy and Research Advice (Russia).
He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000.
