Shira Herzog

Shira Herzog is a recognized expert and spokesperson on public policy issues affecting the non-profit and charitable sector. Her work has focused on strengthening the infrastructure and regulatory environment of the non-profit sector, and on encouraging effective grantmaking strategies for individuals, foundations and corporations. Ms. Herzog is executive vice-president of the Calgary-based Kahanoff Foundation, one of Canada's largest private foundations. Under her leadership, the foundation has become recognized as an innovative funder both in Canada and internationally.

Ms. Herzog developed the foundation's national program to strengthen the infrastructure of the non-profit sectors and she initiated the Non-Profit Sector Research Initiative, which spawned a new field of academic and policy research on Canadian non-profit activity. Ms. Herzog serves on the boards of Philanthropic Foundations Canada and the U.S. Council on Foundations, and is a member of the Advisory Council of Queen's University School of Policy Studies, as well as several additional community boards.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Herzog was a government relations executive, with an expertise in Canadian Middle East policies. She is a columnist with The Globe and Mail a commentator and analyst on Middle East affairs, and she co-hosts a weekly television program, Israel Today.
