South America The Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL) is an international organization created by an agreement between the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Argentina in 1964. INTAL has been actively involved in research activities, technical cooperation with governments and institutions in the academic and business field, and training in support of the integration and regional co-operation processes. The Institute working plan is based upon conceptual strategy which meets the changes produced in the regional integration scenario in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as a response to the strong tendency towards the globalization of the economies. The Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA), was established by a resolution of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations in 1948. In 1984, the Commission was redesignated as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean by the Council. Some of the most important functions of the secretariat of ECLAC are: (1) to promote economic and social development through regional cooperation; (2) to provide advisory services to governments; and (3) to organize and execute programs of technical cooperation. |
